The Science of Intention: How Mind Affects Matter

CHNL-SCI-023

Bashar reviews the scientific evidence for the direct effect of focused intention on physical systems — from random event generators to water crystallization to plant growth — and explains the mechanism through which consciousness couples with physical reality.

There is a growing body of research in your civilization that your mainstream scientific institutions have largely resisted integrating into the standard picture of reality, and I want to speak about it today because it is directly relevant to everything I teach about the relationship between consciousness and physical experience.

Over several decades, researchers at institutions including Princeton University, the Institute of Noetic Sciences, and various independent laboratories around your world have conducted careful, methodologically rigorous experiments examining whether focused human intention can demonstrably influence physical systems. The results of this research — taken in aggregate across hundreds of carefully controlled studies — constitute a pattern that cannot be dismissed as statistical artifact.

The most replicable findings involve what are called random event generators — devices that produce sequences of random binary output, equivalent to electronic coin flips. Under controlled laboratory conditions, with subjects seated at a distance from the devices and simply holding the intention to influence the output in a specific direction, the outputs show statistically significant deviations from random expectation. The effect is small — measurable in the range of fractions of a percent — but it is consistent, it replicates across independent laboratories, and it has withstood extensive methodological scrutiny.

You have also perhaps encountered the work of Japanese researcher Masaru Emoto, who photographed the crystalline structure of frozen water samples after they had been exposed to different kinds of focused intention — both positive and negative. The differences in crystal structure between samples exposed to loving intention and those exposed to negative or fearful intention were striking and consistent. While the methodology of these experiments has been debated, the findings resonate with a truth that is fundamental: water is exquisitely responsive to informational fields, and human consciousness generates a powerful informational field.

The mechanism through which intention couples with physical systems is the same mechanism I have described throughout all of my teachings: the field of consciousness is not separate from the field of physical reality. They are two aspects of the same underlying field. When consciousness focuses with clarity and genuine emotional charge on a specific state — when it holds that state as real, as present, as already the case — it is not imagining something separate from reality. It is actually participating in the generation of that state within the shared field from which both consciousness and matter emerge.
