Emotional Alchemy: Transforming Fear into Excitement

CHNL-PRAC-044

Bashar explains his famous observation that fear and excitement are the same energy interpreted differently, and provides a practical method for consciously shifting from a fear response to an excitement response when facing the unknown.

Let me talk about something I have mentioned many times but which deserves a dedicated exploration: the relationship between fear and excitement, and the practice of what I would call emotional alchemy.

Here is what I want you to notice about fear and excitement in your own body. When you are genuinely excited about something, your heart beats faster. Your breathing quickens. Your attention sharpens. There is an activation in your belly, in your chest. You feel alert, energized, alive to the moment.

Now notice: when you are genuinely afraid of something, your heart beats faster. Your breathing quickens. Your attention sharpens. There is an activation in your belly, in your chest. You feel alert, energized, alive — or rather, hyper-alive — to the moment.

The physiological signature is essentially the same. The chemical signature is essentially the same. The energy is the same energy. The difference is entirely in the interpretation — in the meaning your mind is assigning to the state.

Excitement says: 'This energy means something wonderful and desired is available.' Fear says: 'This energy means something dangerous and unwanted is threatening.' Same energy, opposite interpretation, completely different experience.

This means that in any moment when you are experiencing what you call fear about an unknown outcome, you have genuine access to a choice. Not to suppress the energy — the energy is real and valid and actually useful. But to choose a different interpretation of it. Instead of 'this energy means I am in danger,' you can choose 'this energy means something significant and potentially wonderful is available, and my body is preparing me to meet it fully.'

This is not positive thinking in the superficial sense. It is not denial. The energy is real. The unknown is real. The practice is in recognizing that the meaning you assign to that state is a choice — and that one of the available meanings is genuinely truer, from the perspective of your highest self, than the other. From the perspective of your highest self, every unknown is an opportunity, every challenge is a growth catalyst, every door you have not yet opened contains exactly the experience that your next level of development requires. The fear interpretation is not wrong — it has evolutionary roots and has served its purpose. But the excitement interpretation is more aligned with the actual nature of what you are facing. And with practice, you can learn to reach for that interpretation first.
