Your researchers in what you call psychoneuroimmunology have been documenting, with increasing precision, the bidirectional communication network between your central nervous system, your endocrine system, and your immune system. In simple terms: your psychological and emotional states directly influence the functioning of your immune system, and your immune system sends signals that influence your psychological states. What your medical tradition has treated as separate systems — the mind and the body — are, from the perspective of both your emerging science and my own understanding, one integrated system.
Let me be specific about some of what has been established. Chronic psychological stress — particularly the stress of feeling helpless, hopeless, or persistently under threat — significantly reduces the production and effectiveness of natural killer cells, T-lymphocytes, and other components of your immune response. This is not theory. It has been demonstrated repeatedly in carefully controlled research. Conversely, states of genuine positive emotion — particularly joy, love, and what researchers call meaning or purpose — enhance immune function, increase the production of beneficial neuropeptides, and are associated with measurably better health outcomes.
Your body contains receptors for neuropeptides — the chemical messengers of your emotional states — in virtually every organ and tissue. Your immune cells carry receptors for many of the same molecules that your neurons use to communicate. Your immune system is, quite literally, capable of feeling your emotions. It is responding, in real time, to the emotional weather of your inner life.
From my perspective, this represents science finally catching up with a truth that is quite fundamental: the frequency of your consciousness — the prevailing quality of your emotional and mental state — is the primary organizer of your biological reality. Your body is doing its best to maintain optimal functioning within whatever frequency environment your consciousness is creating. When that frequency environment is one of chronic fear, helplessness, and disconnection, the body's self-maintenance systems — including the immune system — are literally instructed by that environment to reduce their investment in long-term protection. When the frequency environment is one of genuine safety, love, purpose, and joy, those same systems receive the signal that it is not only safe but beneficial to invest fully in your flourishing.
