Service to Others vs. Service to Self: The False Dichotomy

Bashar addresses the spiritual dichotomy of 'service to others' (STO) versus 'service to self' (STS), popularized by the Law of One material. He teaches that this is ultimately a false distinction. True service to others is impossible without first being whole yourself—trying to give from emptiness creates codependency and burnout. Conversely, 'service to self' that genuinely honors the self naturally overflows into benefiting others because a whole being radiates positive influence.

Bashar states that the healthiest path is 'service to All That Is,' which includes yourself as an essential component.

He critiques spiritual teachings that glorify self-sacrifice, noting that martyrdom is often a disguised form of control ('I suffer so you owe me') or a way to avoid self-work. The balanced approach: take care of your own joy and well-being first, and from that overflow, serve others as inspired. 'You cannot pour from an empty cup, and you were never meant to.' The measure of healthy service is whether it increases your energy and joy or depletes them.
